Police brutality has been a topic of interest around the world over the years. In October 2020, voices in Nigeria rose up to protest against this form of brutality. Young people marched into the streets to call for the end of an arm of the Nigerian police force called SARS short for Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a unit known for reportedly brutalizing and maiming young people. This unit were reportedly profiling young people based on physical appearance and what type of phones they use.
The protests began on twitter with a hashtag #ENDSARS which became the rallying cry of victims of police brutality. It also gave way for other protests against unemployment, inadequate power supply and the failings of the government.
On the 20th of October 2020, protesters gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate experienced one of this failings as soldiers who were sent to the toll fate, opened fire on protesters, injuring some and killing others as many fled for their lives.
What began as a peaceful protest eventually turned into a nightmare.
